View form the roadway looking along the western façade of the Pudu Mandapa of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple at Madurai. This frontage, with its sculptures of rearing horsemen, abuts the the east end of the main temple complex. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '286 - This view shows the west front of Trimul Nayak's Portico. Exactly opposite to it, across the road, is the Great Pagoda. It is much to be regretted that the pillars forming this beautiful façade are so thickly covered with whitewash that the carvings are nearly obliterated, though no doubt they are protected by it, if we ever could hope to see the day when it might be removed.'
