Madura. The Great Pagoda [Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple]. Pillars and frescos on wall. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
View of a sculptured figure and wall paintings in the arcade running along the side of the Golden Lily Tank of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '299 - The walls of the Arcade round the Tank are covered with paintings, some of which are seen in this view; also one of the figures into which the columns are carved. These paintings, it may be observed, as well as the colouring of the statues are very much more modern than the architecture of the place; much of it, if not all, was added within the last twenty or forty years.'
