General view of temple gopura. Another copy at Photo 1000 (2006). Lyon's letterpress identifies the temple as the 'Troohootarasa Manghay Pagoda', some six miles east of Ramnad. This is presumably the Tiruttarakosamangai of Robert Sewell's 'Lists of the antiquarian remains in the Presidency of Madras' (vol I, Madras, 1882): '8 miles south-west [sic] of Ramnad...An old temple of Siva stands in the town, highly sculptured and containing a number of inscriptions'. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '364a - In the neighbourhood of Ramnad there are three or four pagodas, said to be all of them of great antiquity, but in none of them can access be gained to the interior. Their lofty Gopuras can be seen from a great distance. This view represents the front of the tower of one of them; it is about six miles from Ramnad, in an easterly direction.'
