View looking across the roof terrace of the palace, towards a suite of rooms. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: 'Poodoocottah. Leaving Avadea Covill in the mornign, the road being so bad as to make night travelling impossible, the territory of the Maharajah of Poodoocottah is entered, at a distance of eight miles; and twenty miles further on his capital is reached. An excellent house is kept there for the use of travellers, who are lodged and fed most sumptuously, and free of all cost during their stay. They are expected, of course, to call at the palace, and a carriage is generally sent by the Maharajah to convey them there. 382 - gives a view of the exterior of the Drawing-room suite used on state occasions, in which visitors of distinction are received. It is literally crammed inside with furniture to such an extent that it is almost impossible to move. The walls are covered with pictures of himself, Lord Harris, and other celebrities, which, judging by their style, must have been painted by native artists.'
