Close view of the gopura of the Brihadishvara Temple at Tanjore (Thanjavur). Lyon's Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '385 - is an enlarged view of the Pyramidal Tower over the entrance, also taken from outside the fort. Notwithstanding the disfigurement of the fortifications, there is a bold originality about its form, which distinguishes it from the more modern examples, and gives it a character not yet met with in any of those previously described. Though leading to a Shivite temple, all the sculptures exhibit a Vishnave tendency, though not, it must be confessed, very marked.' Another copy at Photo 1000/30(3034).
