View looking towards the Nandi pavilion of the Brihadishvara Temple at Tanjore (Thanjavur) in the foreground, with gopuras beyond. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '390 - This view is taken from near the Great Pyramidal Tower, looking backwards towards the two gateway towers through which the temple is entered. In the foreground is the pavilion of the bull Nundi, whose form may be detected in its shadow.' Another copy at Photo 1000/30(3039).
