Close view of the sculptured facade of the base of the sanctuary tower of the Brihadishvara Temple at Tanjore (Thanjavur), with a flight of steps leading up to one of the entrance doorways. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '392 - shows a portion of the Base of the Tower on the south side, with a side entrance for the priests, which seems hardly to be a part of the original design, but added afterwards. On this and the two following Photographs will be observed an inscription in seven lines, which runs all round the base and is quite perfect. It is said to have been read, but to contain only a record of grants and donations to the foundation, and no allusion either to the founders of the temple or the date at which it was erected. It has not, however, been published, and the public have no means of knowing how far this description of its contents is correct.' Another copy at Photo 1000/30(3041).
