General view from the side of a small temple in the court of the Brihadishvara Temple at Tanjore (Thanjavur). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '400 - Between the Subramanya and the large Pyramidal Tower, there is a small temple represented in this view. It is certainly older than the Subramanya, and in style, more resembles the great temple, with which it may be contemporary. The palace of Tanjore is situated inside the large fort, though the two forts are so connected, they may be said to be almost one. The larger one is of a circular form, about 1,000 yards in diameter; the smaller one is a parallelogram, about 600 yards long. The distance from the pagoda to the palace is nearly a mile.'
