View looking along the street facade of the Nayaka Palace at Tanjore (Thanjavur). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '401 - is the first view of the Palace as it is approached from the street. It betrays in every part, the prevalence of those debased forms of Italian architecture, adopted everywhere in the native capitals of India during the last 100 years, and is perhaps the most degraded style of architecture known in any age in any part of the world. Even here, however, a balcony or bracket reveals the fact, that the people were not always so tasteless as they have now become.'
