Tanjore Palace. Carvings on front of the audience chamber. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Close view of arched façade facing the court of the audience hall of the Nayaka Palace at Tanjore (Thanjavur), with elaborate carving in the spandrels and along the eaves. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of Pphotographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '402 - On the decline of the power of the Madura kingdom, after the prosperous reign of Trimul Nayak, Eccojee, a brother of Sivagee the great Maharatta chief, in 1675, conquered this province, and founded the dynasty which still occupies the throne. This palace was probably commenced shortly afterwards; and the court-yard shown in this Photograph may probably be taken as marking the extent to which art had decayed during the century that followed the erection of the palace of Madura. (Photographs 316 to 322.)' Another copy at Photo 1000/30(3051).
