Lyon's 'Notes to cccompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '409 - Entering the enclosure by the door above alluded to, the visitor finds himself behind the temple, and following the eastern wall for a few yards the view here shown is presented to him. The temple itself is raised several feet above the area of the enclosure; and in front of the steps leading up to it there is another portico, which has never been roofed, but is now covered with thatch by the Brahmins, to protect it from the weather. The pillars, it will be observed, are all beautifully carved, and all different. The freshness of the details, however, by-no means corresponds to the antiquity assigned to it, but rather indicates a time subsequent to Trimul Nayak, Rajah of Madura, in the seventeenth century.'
