Close view of a sculptureed column in the temple. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3060). Lyon's 'Notes to acccompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '411 - gives a more detailed view of the second Pillar at the entrance. It represents the fabulous animal, the Yali, standing on an elephant crouching on the ground. As we stand on the top of the steps it is impossible not to be struck with wonder and admiration at the view of the centre aisle before us. Between us and the sanctuary, there are on either side of the centre aisle six pillars of grey granite; two of these have been already shown in Photographs 409 and 410. These two are the same on both sides, but the other eight (four on each side) are all different, as will be presently shown. The same is the case with the row of pillars between the centre aisle and the outer wall, every one of which is beautifully and differently carved.'
