View of section of rock-cut sculptures in the Krishna Mandapa. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3076). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '428 - is a continuation of the Sculptures inside the Krishna Mundapum, described under 427. The subject is similar. The cow licking the calf while being milked, illustrates a belief prevalent throughout the whole of India to this day, the natives declaring that the cow will not give her milk unless the calf is allowed first to suck, and then must be left where she can see it, and lick it,-an assertion any one who cares to take the trouble, may any day prove to be erroneous.'
