Close view of relief sculpture panel in the Varaha Cave Temple. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3078). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '430 - If on leaving this Monolith, and returning in a southerly direction, leaving the stone-cutters and their huts on the left, there is a rough narrow path leading up a sort of channel, through the middle of the granite ridge, and following this, in a short distance, on the left, there is a spacious excavation, intended for a temple of Vishnu. The god is represented in the left end as shown in the Photograph in the Varuha Avatar, or boar incarnation, - the third of that god. He holds in one hand the goddess Lakshmi; in the other, his usual characteristics, adoring figures surround him, and in front a fallen figure, with a snake-hood of five heads, with his hands joined in an attitude of devotion.'
