Close view of rock-cut sculpture panel of Vishnu in the Varaha Cave Temple. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3079). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '431 - represents the Carvings in the same cave as described in 430, and which are on the right as you enter. The subject seems some incarnation of Vishnu, and he is represented with eight arms, holding various weapons, but both the attitude and action look more like Shiva than this god. Its position, the emblems, however, seem to settle the point.'
