Rock-cut sculpture of Vishnu in the Mahishmardini Cave Temple. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3082). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '434 - Continuing up the same path, through the very centre of the range, at the very top, on the right, there is another excavation, smaller than the other, but also wrought out of one mass of rock. It is a temple of Shiva, and its sculpture is so excellent, that it is justly considered the gem of the place. Facing the entrance, in the middle compartment, is a representation of Shiva, of large size, with four arms, while a small figure of Brahma stands on his right, and Vishnu on his left. At the left of the entrance is a gigantic image of Vishnu, sleeping on the Seshseja, or the five-headed snake, its heads forming his canopy, as shown in the Photograph.'
