Rock-cut sculpture of Durga in the Mahishamardini Cave Temple. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3083). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '435 - Opposite to the Carvings shown in the Photograph last described, in the same cave, is a representation of Durga, mounted on a lion, attacking Maheshasur, or the buffalo-headed demon. This is certainly one of the most spirited pieces of Hindu sculpture to be found in India, and is quite equal to any thing of its class at Ellora, or in any of the Western caves. If there is any succession in the age of these caves, the admixture of the two religions and the perfection of the sculpture in this one would point it out as the oldest.'
