Mahavellipore, near Madras. The first monolith [the Draupadi Ratha]. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
View from the west of the Draupadi Ratha, showing the entrance, with flanking figures carved in relief. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3087). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany aseries of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '439 - represents the one most to the north, and is the only one which is finished, and has its cell hollowed out, and with carvings of figures inside. It is 11 feet long and 17 feet high, and is evidently copied from the huts that were in use among the people at the time. The shape of the boulder out of which it is carved, probably suggested the form.'
