View from the platform of the Hoysalesvara Temple at Halebid, looking towards a section of the richly sculptured west façade. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '476 - is the corresponding view to the last, taken from nearly the same spot, but looking north instead of south. The square pavilion in the centre marks the junction of the two porticos on this side, as that represented in Photograph, No. 471 [print 21], did the corresponding junction in the east. This view, perhaps, gives us the best idea of the sinuosities of the walls of the temple, the two blocks or bases of towers, to be seen in the centre, are both solid, and the wall (of which a portion is seen) between the two, extends so far behind both of them, as almost completely to detach them from the building; the walls on each side of the narrow alley thus formed, being exquisitely carved.'
