Bellary Rock and Fort. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Inscription: Numbered '483' in the negative.
Genre: Architectural Photography
General view showing the walls and bastions of the fort. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '483 - At Bellary there is another of those Granite rocks rising abruptly from the plains as at Trichinopoly, etc. This one is larger than any yet seen, and is of a semi-elliptic form, the longest side being from north to south. There is a mixture of felspar in the rock, which often presents large rhomboidal prisms which strongly reflect the rays of the sun, and render Bellary famed for being one of the very hottest stations in India. This view shows a portion of the rock on its west side, also the fort and citadel; the latter of which is said to be of great antiquity.' Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3131).
