General view of the entrance porch in front of the main shrine of the Ramachandra Temple. The parapet of the temple is richly carved with figures set within niches. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '490 - About a quarter of a mile in a north-east direction from the group of buildings illustrated in the last few views, is situated a small Hindu temple. It is called the Volkonda, or pleasure hall. It had the usual pyramidal tower of Dravidian architecture over its entrance, but now all are in ruins. On entering the enclosure, the porch façade shown in this view is first seen. As will be observed from its position, it is added to, and consequently more modern than the porch behind it. In style it very much resembles the temple at Peroor, but is older, and probably was added in the first half of the sixteenth century.' Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3138).
