View of the south façade of the convent Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, in the Portuguese settlement at Bandel, on the Hugli north of Calcutta. To the right of the building stands a flagstaff made from a ship's mast and said (according to D. G. Crawford, 'Brief history of the Hughly district,' Calcutta, 1903, p. 11) to have been erected in 1655 as a thanks offering for escape from a storm. This is discussed in some detail in H. Hosten, 'A week at the Bandel Convent, Hugli' ('Bengal past and present,' vol. 10, 1915, pp.36-120). Facing p. 36 of this article is a photograph of the church taken from a similar viewpoint to this print (from the masonry bridge crossing the channel to the south of the church). See also Photo 247/4 (8).
