- Scope & Content:

Genre: Portrait Photography
Full-length portrait of the former minister, seated on a mat and holding a fan. This portrait is reproduced in J. G. Scott's 'Gazetteer of Upper Burma and the Shan States' (5 vols, Rangoon, 1900-01), vol. I, pl.5, and there captioned 'The Myowun [Governor] of Mandalay in Court dress'. A cropped version of this portrait, in which he is identified as 'Taingda Mingyi who wielded considerable power,' is reproduced in W. L. Barretto, 'Mindon', Rangoon, n.d. [1935]), facing p. 113. Taingda Mingyi had been a minister under King Mindon and (according to Barretto, p. 113) was among those who voted for the appointment of Thibaw as Crown Prince.
A cropped version of this portrait is also reproduced in Gwendolen Trench Gascoigne, 'Among Pagodas and Fair Ladies' (London, 1896), p. 158. He is described in the text as 'a charming old man who had been head of the police in Thebaw's time' (p. 156). She describes his clothes in this photograph as 'his ministerial dress' (p. 161).
