Full-length portrait, showing the Marquess of Zetland seatedbetween two Chinese men. Reproduced as the frontispiece to volume 1 of The Earl of Ronaldsay, 'A Wandering Student in the Far East' (2 vols, Blackwood, Edinburgh and London, 1908). See also p. 64, where Zetland describes setting out from Ichang with 'two Chinese servants picked up by Belt at Hankow; Mr Chou, commonly known as 'Joe', my faithful and accomplished interpreter; and Peter, my Chinese cook and body-servant, equipped to a remarkable degree with all the virtues and most of the vices common to his kind.' If Zetland's dating is accurate, this portrait would have been taken after his party had crossed the Burmese frontier.
