View looking towards the two groups of animals crossing the river near Kuruk-aste (I.A. Map 8, A1). This photograph was taken at the start of Stein's abortive attempt to reach the Mazar-tagh range on the Khotan River by heading directly south-east across the Taklamakan Desert from Maral-bashi. In addition to the advantages of gaining time by this short-cut, 'and the attraction presented by such a venture across an unknown tract of desert' (i, 81), Stein hoped to establish that the Mazar-tagh hills on the Khotan River were part of the same geological structure as the hills of the same name south-east of Maral-bashi. However, the harsh climbing over massive dunes took a heavy toll on the strength of Stein's camels and on 31 October he relates that 'more disquieting still was the fact that in the course of a ten hours' tramp extending over eleven miles as measured by the cyclometer we had not succeeded in covering more than a little over seven miles of direct distance.' (i, 87). The attempt was abandoned at Camp XXVIII on 1 November.
