The Potola [Potala Palace] and entrance gate [Lhasa]. Photographer: White, John Claude
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
View looking towards the Potala Palace, with the roadway passing through the base of a chorten or stupa in the foreground (the Pargo Kaling Gateway). Another copy at Photo 1084/2 (23), in White's 'Tibet and Lhasa' (Calcutta, [c. 1906]), where the caption reads: 'Through this Chorten, Colonel Younghusband and escort marched on the 4th August, 1904, when European troops for the first time in history entered the city of Lhasa. Just inside the Chorten one finds oneself right at the foot of the Po-ta-la'. This is the western chorten gateway to the city, south-west of the Potala. This photograph is reproduced in Francis Younghusband, 'India and Tibet' (London, 1910), facing p. 250.
