General view. The 'Left Training-bund' was a sandbank constructed to guide the river through the bridge. Gales writes (see notes in Introduction): 'Little progress was made until the beginning of December, when there were 1,000 coolies on the earthwork of the bund, but just before the Christmas holidays there were 7,000 on the training-bund and approach-bank...by the end of January the left training-bund, with the exception of the last seven chains, was finished...'.
