Well No 7, [Curzon Bridge construction, Allahabad]. Photographer: Unknown
- Scope & Content:

Genre: Historical Events
View of the well weighed down with old rails and pig-iron. Three European engineers are standing on top. Gales writes (see notes in Introduction): 'By the 24th April well No 7 had been sunk to a depth of 98 feet below low-water level, and was 2 feet in the clay...As neither chiselling and dredging, pumping, nor shaking with dynamite would move the well another inch, it was unloaded, and a section of pier was built upon it, in the full expectation that, with the additional weight of the stone masonry, and the load of rails and pig-iron which would be available for weighting by the time the section was built, there would be no difficulty in forcing the well down the last 3 feet. But although the surcharged load...was 1,000 tons, no sinking had resulted from 12 days' efforts up to the 29th June, and the well was stopped for the season'.
