Gales writes (see notes in Introduction): '[The timber staging] was heavy and cumbersome to erect, but it was found that, once erected on the sandbank, the trestle could be pulled out from under the girder and dragged along on rails bedded on balks of timber to the next span but one in about the same time as was required to dismantle and re-erect the Sulivan staging'.
