pp 469-534. Report submitted by Abur Razzack detailing his journey from Bombay to Mecca as a pilgrim undertaking the Hadj, plus correspondence thereon received from the Foreign Office, the Under Secretary of State for India; a report by Dr E Dickson, British Delegate to the Board of Health at Constantinople; and comments thereon by the Government of India.
The report is very detailed, including discussion of travel by steamer and camel; the travelling conditions for pilgrims; provision of accommodation, food, water and medicine; the experience of engaging agents or motowwif [muṭawwif]; experience of medical inspection and quarantine; observations on the sanitary conditions of towns and villages on the journey to Mecca; comments on the Ottoman inspection regime; visits to holy sites; attacks by bandits; details of medical cases treated by Ruzzack during his trip; and recommendations for the establishment of a British Health Officer and Agent for Pilgrims. Appended is a table detailing the arrival of pilgrim steamers at Jeddah for the Hadj of 1878 [1295 AH].
