Two votive stupas from Bodh Gaya. Photographer: Garrick, Henry Baily Wade
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Close view of two small re-assembled votive stupas, now in the Indian Museum, Calcutta. Credited to Dr [Benjamin] Simpson in T. Bloch, 'A list of the photographic negatives of Indian antiquities in the collection of the Indian Museum: with which is incorporated the list of similar negatives in the possession of the the India Office' (Calcutta, 1900), but more probably by Garrick: see Alexander Cunningham and H. B. W. Garrick, 'Report of tours in North and South Bihar, in 1880-81' (A.S.I. vol. XVI, Calcutta, 1883), p.136: 'To the north of the great temple, there are a great number of Buddhist topes, mostly of bluestone. Of these I fitted a few together to be photographed; at present they are scattered all over the place, the top portion of one being in some cases underneath others, and it seems a thousand pities that these topes should be in their present condition when with a little trouble and still less expense a selection of them might be fitted and set up.'
