General view of the ruined gateway, a poor quality print.

Described in 'List of Ancient Monuments in Bengal. Revised and corrected up to 31st August 1895' (Calcutta, 1896), pp. 436-437:

'The southern or Kotwali gate was a magnificent archway of 51 feet. Under the arch the passage is 17' 4''. The gateway forms a brick arch of 30 feet high and 16¾ feet span. On either side are pierced bastions with two rows of loopholes...It has fallen into the last stage of decay; and the arch cannot much longer hold together; so much of it has fallen out, and the vegetation grows thickly in and about it.'
