Inscription on upper face of argha, Jhirna Photographer: Garrick, Henry Baily Wade
- Scope & Content:
-
View of the inscription carved in the rock slab, described in A. Cunningham, 'Reports of a tour in Bundelkhand and Rewa in 1883-84...' (A.S.I. vol XXI part I, Calcutta, 1885), pp. 112-113: 'Piawan...means simply the ''drinking place''. The spot is a small valley about 800 feet wide and half a mile in length, with precipitous rocks on both sides, about 200 feet high. At the western end a small stream falls over the cliff, and the rock below, on which the water falls, has been formed into an argha for the reception of a lingam, or phallic symbol of Siva. A view of this argha has been given by my assistant, Mr Garrick, who first discovered the place. He has described it under the name of Jhirna, or the ''water-fall''...' A photograph by Garrick of the inscription is reproduced as lithograph in H.B.W. Garrick, 'Report of a tour through Behar, Central India, Peshawar, and Yusufzai' (A.S.I. vol. XIX, Calcutta, 1885), pl.xviii, and although this is not the same view as this print, it was probably taken by Garrick on the same occasion and not, as Bloch's list states, by Beglar. Garrick describes his visit on pp. 68-71 of the above work.
