Hari Chand. Four-armed goddess standing (presented by Mr Anson). Photographer: Archaeological Survey of India
- Scope & Content:
-
Note on page 4 of the Annual Report reads: '...perhaps the most valuable of the stones presented this year is the large standing figure (headless) presented by Mr Anson, Assistant Commissioner, Charsadda. This figure, which is some 3½ feet high in its present condition, was found at a small mound close to the border east of Shabkadar, and represents a goddess with four arms, which fact at once invests it with unusual interest, for figures with more than two arms are almost unknown in Gandhara art. Unfortunately the upper pair of arms are lost, but the lower ones hold a spear and a well defined wheel respectively, while the peculiarly Greek nature of the drapery is a further point of interest'.
