Bahuriband. Colossal Jain image. Photographer: Cousens, Henry
- Scope & Content:
-
Inscription: Titled and numbered in the negative.
Genre: Architectural Photography
Photographed by Cousens' assistants: 'From Jabalpur I sent men to Bilhari, Rupnath, Bahuriband, and Tigowa, all in the north of the Jabalpur district, to get photographs of the remains at those places and copies of the inscriptions. This they did, and brought back four photographic negatives and two impressions' (Henry Cousens, 'Progress Report of the Archaeological Survey of Western India, for the months May 1893 to April 1894', p. 6). The statue is 12 feet 2 inches high and is seen here with the lower portion recently excavated and with an Indian figure standing beside it to indicate scale. Described ('a stiff, clumsy figure') in A. Cunningham, 'Report of a tour in the Central Provinces in 1873-74 and 1874-75' (A.S.I. vol. IX, Calcutta, 1879), pp. 40-41. Another copy of this print at Photo 1002 (1227).
