View looking towards modern shrine on the top of a small hill. The site was visited by A. Carlleyle in the early 1870s, who put forward the theory that this was the site of a Buddhist stupa (see A.C.L. Carlleyle, 'Report of a Tour in Eastern Rajputana in 1871-72 and 1872-73', ASI vol. 6, Calcutta, 1878, pp. 196ff). This interpretation is disputed in the 1905 report, although Bhandarkar agrees that the sculptured stone found at the site 'was, as he suggests, one of the architraves of a Buddhist gateway.' (Progress Report of the Archaeological Survey of Western India for the year ending 30th June 1905', p. 59).
