Caption note reads in full: 'No. 1. Hpongyi-byan at Kemendine, Burma. General view of the ground where the festivities were held, showing principally the non-descript bird bearing the cage in which the coffin of the Hpongyi was supposed to have have been brought on to the ground. The bird is supposed to have carried its precious burden and alighted on to the characteristic base on which it is seen standing, on one leg.'
