Genre: Architectural Photography
Taken at a low angle, the view looks up to the top of a hill with tufts of long grass blowing in the wind; on the central skyline, there is a dark, roofless house with a tree to the left; the sky above the ruin is very threatening. Published on page 103 of 'Remains of Elmet' (London: Faber, 1979) and on page 18 of 'Elmet' (London: Faber, 1994), where it accompanies Ted Hughes’ poem 'Two Photographs of Top Withens'. Image chosen for the retrospective exhibition "Landmarks", held at the Barbican, 2001. Print 41 is titled, signed and priced; prints 42-46 have a small black dot at the left edge of the image.
