- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
Showing the crate containing the colossal lion sculpture being shifted with sheerlegs. A note accompanying photograph reads: 'No. 1. Shows the perilous fix into which the case got.' After being dug up from site and crated, the lion was lowered over the cliff face to the beach below, where it was loaded on board ship for transportation to England. This operation was successfully accomplished on 1 July 1858. For a watercolour showing the crate being lowered, see Mss. Add. 31980 (199). The lion sculpture now stands in the Great Court of the British Museum.
