Cnidus. View of colossal lion when first discovered. Photographer: McCartney, J.
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
Showing Charles Newton standing beside the recently excavated lion sculpture on the clifftop at Cnidus. A note accompanying photograph reads: 'No. 3. Gives a view of the lion after he had been turned over.' The photograph is reproduced as a tinted lithograph in C. T. Newton, 'A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus, and Branchidae, being the Results of an Expedition sent to Asia Minor by H.M. Government in 1856' (2 vols., London, 1861), vol. 2, plate 61 (top). The original photograph is there credited to 'Macartney R.E.' (although the photographer consistently signs himself 'McCartney'). For another copy of this print, see Mss. Add. 31980 (195).
