No. 3. Colossal face, north side of Mausoleum [of Halicarnassus, Bodrum]. Photographer: Spackman, Benjamin L.
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
Close view of a sculptured head. Prints 53-57 form part of the enclosure with Newton's despatch no. 19 of 12 June 1857: 'Close to this portion of the head of the horse I found a face broken off from a male colossal head. I have little doubt that this belongs to the figure in the quadriga. The general type of the features would indicate that they present the likeness of some personage treated in an ideal manner. The whole character of the head much resembled the ideal portraits of Alexander the Great on the coins of Lysimachus and in several extant marble busts. It is not improbable, therefore that we have here the portrait of Mausolus himself. The face is slightly bearded, the features massive but finely formed and with a most noble expression; indeed, I have never seen in classical art any head in which such majesty was combined with the traits of individual character...' (Mss. Add. 46889A f. 92r.). Prints 12-15 are reproduced in Charles Newton, 'Travels in the Levant' (2 vols., London, 1865), vol. 2, plate 6.
