No. 4. Hellenic wall north of the Mausoleum [of Halicarnassus, Bodrum]. Photographer: Spackman, Benjamin L.
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
View of section of wall, built from large, finely jointed masonry blocks, with Corporal Jenkins standing at the left. Prints 53-57 form part of the enclosure with Newton's despatch no. 19 of 12 June 1857: 'No. 4. The Hellenic wall north of the Mausoleum, immediately behind, i.e. north of which I found the two halves of the colossal horse, and the mass of sculpture as reported in my despatch, no. 16 of May 11. The figure standing by the wall is Corporal Jenkins, the sapper in charge of the works. As his height is rather more than six feet, it serves to show the height of the wall. The upper course of stones where the hand of Corporal jenkins is placed has bulged outwards; evidently from the shock of the fall of the pyramid and sculpture, the greater part of which lay immediately behind this part of the wall. The original height of this wall cannot now be ascertained; it is probable however, that it did not exceed ten feet.' (Mss. Add. 46889A f. 94r.). Reproduced as a tinted lithograph in Charles Thomas Newton, 'A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus and Branchidae' (2 vols., London, 1861), vol. 1, plate 6 (bottom). For another copy, see Mss. Add. 31980 (7).
