Close view of sculpture of male head. Prints 53-57 form part of the enclosure with Newton's despatch no. 19 of 12 June 1857: 'A little beyond this spot to the east I found a smaller bearded face broken off in like manner from the head so as to present three quarters of the face. The condition of this was even more perfect that that of the head last described [viz., print 55]. This head though inferior in scale and grandeur of expression to the colossal one, is exceedingly beautiful and may also be a portrait...' (Mss. Add.46889A ff. 92v.-93r.). For another copy, see Mss.
