Genre: Archaeological Photography
View looking towards a mound of fallen columns, lying among vegetation. Prints 187-200 form enclosure no. 22 of Newton's despatch no. 29 of 16 September 1857. Newton had earlier written that he was anxious for another photographer to join Corporal Spackman, since 'By having a second photographer I could have views taken of localities of great historical interest in the neighbourhood of Budrum. I would particularly mention Cnidus ... the temple of Hekate at Lagina in Caria which I discovered last year; the statues in the 'Holy Way' at Miletus ... and the ruins of the celebrated temple of Branchidae...' (Newton to the Earl of Clarendon, 24 June 1857, Mss. Add. 46889A f. 103). On Newton's instructions Lieutenant Smith visited Lagina 'with Lance Corporal Spackman Royal Engineers, and the photographic apparatus, for the purpose of making a plan of the temple of Hecate ... and taking photographic views of the pieces of sculpture lying among the ruins' (Smith, 'Account of an excursion to Lagina, Stratonicea and Labranda', dated 12 August 1857, Mss. Add. 46889A f. 202r.). Smith and Spackman arrived at Lagina on 13 July. Another copy (less cropped than this version) can be found at Mss. Add. 31980 (262).
