Nos. 13 and 14. Arched gateway and monumental Corinthian column at Eski Hissar (Stratoniceia). Photographer: Spackman, Benjamin L.
- Scope & Content:
-
Inscription: Inscribed in the negative: 'B. L. Spackman. No. 13.'
An atmospheric, if very grainy view from a paper negative of the ruins at Stratoniceia, near the modern village of Eskihisar, showing standing and fallen columns and masonry among the vegetation. See note at print 187. Lieutenant Smith's report notes: 'After I had made the enclosed survey, we went on to Eski Hissar, where Corporal Spackman took three photographs, viz: (13) and (14) two of an arched gateway and monumental Corinthian column and one (15) of a large Roman building near the Aga's Konak.' ('Account of an excursion to Lagina, Stratoniceia and Labranda,' dated 12 August 1857, Mss. Add. 46889A f. 204v.) Photograph 14 is not included here, probably because it was almost identical: the paper negative at Mss. Add.31980 (366), which shows virtually the same view, is probably the original of the missing photograph. After their work at Stratoniceia Smith and Spackman visited Melassa: 'Here, I intended taking several photographs, but the chemical had evaporated by the heat to such a degree, that the collodion could not be used, and some wax paper views which Corporal Spackman took were unsuccessful' (ibid, f. 205r.) Print signed 'B.L. Spackman No. 13' in the negative.
