General view, looking towards gateway of the walled entrance to the compound: 'The road went straight to Gargunsa, while the river wound eastwards; passing at first over stones, pebbles and sand; the road, 5 miles from Gargunsa, led us into a swamp which continued till Gargunsa was reached. This place consists of the two Garpons' houses, a Buddhist chapel, a few mud huts and some black tents. The permanent buildings are on a refuse heap and so raised a few feet above the swamp; a stream flows a few yards from them, the swamp surrounds them. The village is about 3 miles from the western hills and a little further from those to the east; it is in a depression considerably below the level of the river three miles away; the aneroid made it as much as 200 feet lower, so that at any time Gargunsa may disappear in a lake.'
