Full-length standing portrait of the Tibetan official. 'August 8th. — We started about 8 a.m., and leaving the river passed over a stony hill, and descended to Namru which consists of a few fields, two mud huts, 2 or 3 tents and a mud rest-house. This place is half way between Gartok and Gargunsa, and is the residence of a local magnate, the Ponbo of Namru. Breakfast at noon in a hailstorm, after which the Ponbo came to pay a visit...A Ponbo is a Western Tibetan, he holds his post by inheritance, he collects revenue and pays it to the Garpons direct, and is, besides, allowed to collect a certain amount in kind for himself...The Ponbo's lot is not a happy one; he says the local people all want traders to come, it is only the officials from Lhasa who obstruct.' ('Progress Report, August 7st to 16th,' p. 1, Add.63129).
