Masud Khan (in Cossack uniform) and Colonel Glavroff. Photographer: Sykes, Percy Molesworth
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Portrait Photography
Portrait of the two men on horseback, photographed while investigating archaeological remains to the west of Darreh Gaz: 'Upon returning to Mohamedabad, Masud Khan received a telegram from Colonel Glodoff, who commands a division of artillery at Askabad, to the effect that he was coming to Darragaz to shoot. At first both my host and I thought he was being sent to watch my movements, but we finally came to the conclusion that this was not the case. Like most Russian officers he rated the Afghan army very much above its probable fighting value, and referred especially to its 'good artillery'. Indeed it is curious how very badly informed Russians are about Afghanistan. The fact appears to be that most of the secret service money is embezzled.'
