- Scope & Content:

Genre: Historical Events
Half-length portrait of William C. Hopkinson, wearing the uniform of an immigration inspector, photographed on board a vessel at Vancouver. Hopkinson had previously been a police inspector in Calcutta, but when this photograph was taken he had for some years been employed as an immigration inspector in Vancouver. He was involved in the 'Komagata Maru' incident, when a shipload of Indian immigrants was prevented from disembarking at Vancouver, and was shot and killed by a Sikh, Mewa Singh, in the Vancouver Courthouse on 21 October 1914. At his trial Mewa Singh defended his actions on the grounds of Hopkinson's corruption and extortion of bribes from the Indian community in Vancouver. For a prison photograph of Mewa Singh and others implicated in the murder, see prints 396-399 and for a series of photographs of Hopkinson's funeral, see prints 412-454.
