The Gunbad-i-Kabus from the south-west [Gonbad-e Kavus]. Photographer: Watson, John Williams
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Ethnographical Photography
View looking towards the obelisk and surrounding (modern) buildings at the Russian post. The post was set up by the agreement of the Persian and Russian governments in order to stop trans-frontier raiding. 'Before quitting Gunbad-i-Kabus, which is now the capital of the district, a few lines must be devoted to the very fine building which, in the distance, is not unlike Cleopatra's Needle. It was erected to serve as a tomb by Kabus, who reigned as a prince of Gurgan. Two identical bands of Kufic inscription give the date as A.D. 997. Unless, which is unlikely, the bricks, which have been cut away all round, be replaced, this interesting old building, which forms a splendid landmark, will inevitably fall in a few years' time, whereas a trifling expenditure would possibly preserve it for centuries to come.' (Sykes, p. 14).
